The Dreaded 9-5 Working Lifestyle
Contrary to popular belief – the 9-5 working lifestyle is actually not too bad. There. I said it! Hit me!. In fact, I personally enjoy it, but we’re all making a vital mistake in our assertions regarding this working lifestyle.
The job is at fault – not the time it spans.
This is personally what I believe. Having worked at a job from 9-5, I am well aware of exactly what people mean when they say, “I prefer working for myself, than in a dead-end office job.” However, I see things a little differently, and I think that it is this interpretation, that has lead me to having an enjoyable working life.
If the environment where you’re working is safe, exciting, rewarding, meaningful and enjoyable – then you will most likely be happy working there.
This is key. Think back through all of your job roles you were at your happiest. These were probably the times where you had the least supervision and hawk-eyes watching your every move. In my opinion, employees are more productive when they’re put in less restrictive environments to get work done.

These are the jobs you should be looking at, or rather, it is the components which make a job great, that you should be trying to fit into, or replicate.
Many people assume that a 9-5 working lifestyle is infinitely a dead-end job, or boring. In many cases, it will be – especially if you’re applying for entry roles in a supermarket or chain of restaurants who only care about how much money their making.
People need to start expecting more from their employees – unless you have a starving family to feed, or have declared yourself bankrupt.
Make an employer’s life difficult to hire you. Ok maybe not. I don’t mean to say that you should self-sabotage your job opportunities, but rather to start having some standards, especially if you have a somewhat remarkable skillset.
Unfortunately, there is always more supply than demand in the job market – we can’t do much about that.
However, my advice would be to choose to work for a company who genuinely cares about their employee’s. One who’s values and beliefs you share – providing true job satisfaction, and has meaning behind what they’re doing.
The timeframe is irrelevant when you’ve found work that you genuinely enjoy – why? Because you feel that you’re a part of something bigger than yourself, and that by itself is personally invigorating!
Self-Employment Isn’t For Everyone
You end up working even longer hours (start earlier and finish later), however it is incredibly rewarding. It is simply just one type of job that actually rewards you for the service of value that you have created.
I believe that the 9-5 working lifestyle can be incredibly rewarding – just depends on who your employers are, and what they believe makes a job – great!
